Imagine an advanced, uber-personalised Augmented Reality you could activate with a blink…

Unfortunately, today’s smart eyewear experience is more like a smartwatch for your face. However, companies like Microsoft and Magic Leap are investing billions in business applications for Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR). With Apple and Facebook also developing their own devices, smart eyewear could eventually replace smartphones, impacting every aspect of our lives.

But as with any new advancement in consumer technology, the hype and development of AR/MR are outpacing any research into potential effects on the mind or vision from prolonged exposure. When it comes to memories, the brain doesn’t differentiate between the virtual and the real, so users of advanced AR/MR might find themselves struggling to discern reality from illusion. And the hyper-personalisation of one’s world-view augmented by ultra-realistic filters could exaggerate the tunnel vision and silo-thinking already exasperated by today’s social media.

Will advanced smart eyewear show us a better world, or will it blind us to the real one? To develop an advanced Mixed Reality contact lens for my speculative fiction novel, I set out to future think a world where current trends collided with a fully-immersive MR experience.

What makes this so exciting, is that combining 100% FOV with advanced spatial computing could lead to a fourth XR, what I call Alt-R (Alternate Reality).

(The present state of AR/MR)

As explained in one of my previous articles, AR, MR and VR are Extended Reality technologies — VR replaces our view of reality, AR overlays our view with virtual graphics and information, and MR interweaves the virtual with the real world so they seem as one. MR requires spatial computing and a lot of processing power, so most of today’s consumer eyewear is AR, but it’s all a bit nascent and clunky. The immersion of the experience is reliant on a devices’ field of vision (FOV) — that’s the limited part of your view where the augmented graphics can be displayed. With today’s maximum FOV at around 50°, objects in the distance aren’t augmented, and any virtual effects will stop and disappear if they extend too far into your peripheral. Also, complete hand and eye-tracking are still evolving, so most smart eyewear requires control by a handheld device, your voice, or via a touchpad on the arm of the eyewear — far from the vision Minority Report promised us.

(What would fully-immersive MR look like?)

For AR/MR to be fully immersive, the FOV would need to cover 100% of our vision. For that, we’d need some sort of wrap-around goggles or in-eye technology, like the smart lenses being developed by companies like Mojo.

What makes this so exciting, is that combining 100% FOV with advanced spatial computing could lead to a fourth XR, what I call Alt-R (Alternate Reality) — where everything in view can be altered by augmentation, but all real-world perspective, dimensions and spatial qualities are maintained, so users can interact with their augmented world as if they were interacting with the real one. Going further down this rabbit hole, every user could end up experiencing a completely different holographic version of the one physical space. Only they would see their own alternate reality — personalisation on steroids. Or groups of people with similar thinking could share the same augmented view, like those who want everyone to look a certain way — discrimination gone next level.

MR? (How soon could we see fully-immersive MR?)

It took 78 yrs to develop smartphone technology from its conception in 1940 to the fully functioning experience of the new generation phones of 2018. If we consider 42 years have passed since the first AR headset was created in 1968, and factor in technology improvements, we could hypothesise we’ll have a fully immersive MR lens within two decades.

(What might the world look like in 2040?)

With so many volatile political and economic trajectories to consider (not to mention out-of-the-blue pandemics), let’s focus on the more certain future scenario of everyone’s favourite topic — climate change.

According to the latest IPCC report our current usage of carbon-based fuels will warm the earth by at least 1.5°C by 2040 and continue rising. Extreme weather events such as forest fires, heatwaves, floods, droughts, mega-hurricanes, and super-storms, will become more frequent. The sea-level is also rising, albeit slowly, but with 2.4 billion people living within 100 kilometres of the coast, and 600 million living in coastal areas less than 10 meters above sea level, the mass displacement of people is imminent. Such drastic and more frequent climate and environmental changes will become harder to ignore.

But it is this very ease of escape to technological distraction that fosters our denial, creates an addiction to our escapism, and contributes to the enabling of our future nightmare.

Now, if you’re like me, the certainty of the above scenario is too depressing to think about, and it’s about now when I’d swipe my phone to check my many social apps, or I might escape into my current binge show. But it is this very ease of escape to technological distraction that fosters our denial, creates an addiction to our escapism, and contributes to the enabling of our future nightmare. Suffice to say, even as technological distractions become more immersive and sophisticated, our current behaviour trends are likely to remain the same.

(Current behaviour trends in consumer technology)

(Filters and Echo Chambers enabling denial)

When we use filters to choose what we want to see or hear, we also hide from ourselves what we don’t want to feel. Our filters on news, social apps, dating apps, and more, contribute to our personal Echo Chambers — those secluded gardens of support for our own beliefs that close us off to being challenged to learn. While silos of social discourse have a positive effect in that they force us to build a rational argument for our POV, the silos can become so dense our POV feels the norm, further filtering our experience and narrowing our perspective. Although possibly not as bad as we first thought, echo chambers are still happening — how many times have you heard someone on Facebook announce they have just proudly deleted X number of friends for their unacceptable views of the most recent topical discrimination issue?

But we’re not totally to blame for this selective exposure. Many automated filtering processes are going on that we don’t control.

(Auto-personalisation and anticipatory design deciding for us)

Facebook, Instagram, Tik Tok, Spotify, Google — they all use algorithms that shape our online experience and world-view based on what someone or something else thinks we want. Meanwhile, everything with an internet connection, from fridges to speakers, is starting to anticipate our needs to shape our real-world experience. Although much of this AI uses machine learning to ‘learn’ for themselves, the morals behind these algorithms are originally programmed by people. Who were they? What were their values at the time? Do they have political biases? How much of these affect the algorithm?

As morally clean as the makers of these algorithms may try to be, their key purpose — their reason for existence — is company profit, which comes from maintaining constant user engagement. So, these algorithms are most likely tweaked to encourage addictive behaviours by stimulating our brains to produce a pleasure chemical called dopamine, the same one produced when a drug or other type of addiction begins.

(Constant content fostering addiction)

When we binge on Netflix, our brains pump a constant stream of dopamine into our bodies. Australians watch about 17hrs TV every week to get their fix of simulated but potent emotional experiences. And this surplus of content has been shown to contribute to a narrowing of the global attention span, driving the demand for more new content, whilst also reducing the time that trends last… which in turn drives more demand for more new content. Our brains are junked up on short, intense fixes of entertainment, which makes us more susceptible to catchy, emotion-triggering concepts in the form of propaganda news and memes. When you consider Netflix uses algorithms to create their films according to cultural trends, and all of Disney’s next 22 films are remakes rather than new stories, you could be forgiven for thinking our addiction is dumbing us down.

(Saturation numbs our empathy)

Further narrowing our world-view is the saturation of tragic news from around the world. With more camera phones in more areas around the world, it can seem like we live just a block away from constant chaos. Shifts in world power, the breaking down of the status quo, and the decline of the environment generate more news of impending worse case scenarios, all causing a constant stream of drama — more emotionally charged than Netflix’s latest hit series — that is numbing us to tragedy. This can drive us to tighten our personal curation even more, further feeding the algorithms dealing out quick fixes rather than the soulful, feeling experiences we need.

Our current behaviour and design trends form quite a self-perpetuating filtering machine of denial — let’s see how that fairs in the future of Alt-R.

2040 (Welcome to 2040)

You, like most Gen Z and millennials, are fully incorporated into the workplace, while Gen X is headed for retirement. The world hit over 1.5% warming — way to go, team — so the damage of increasing extreme weather events fills the news feed scrolling on the smart wall in your studio. A predictive algorithm warns you to expect another pandemic soon. Due to the heat, most construction is now done at night, which has a terrible effect on your sleep patterns. At least you get to work from home — you’re a Vertical Farm Consultant, which is mostly just remote monitoring.

You look out the window — just a few bike riders this morning, with the usual stream of glassine auto-pods. The city looks almost utopian.

You activate your Lenz — the most immersive contact lens with Alt-R technology — and a message bubble floats up in your view. It’s another extreme heat day, and the back-up system for one of the farms you consult for has failed — they want you to go in. You hadn’t noticed the heat because you’re lucky enough to live in one of the new renewable-energy-based complexes that leverage intelligent architecture to keep cool. The new complexes are all a little in-land, safely far away from the coastal mansions now worthless as they cling to eroded shores.

激活Lenz(采用Alt-R技术的最身临其境的隐形眼镜)后,视图中会弹出一个消息气泡。

But the auto-pods are all off-line, too, so you have to walk through the city. You hate that. The fluctuating reliability of the heat-affected infrastructure means less permeant jobs are offered and more homeless fill the cooler corners of the streets. It’s a real downer. Fortunately, the Lenz’s Mirage filter auto-personalises your view to the way you prefer to see the world. Which is great, because reality is depressing, and distraction seems to have become more sophisticated to meet your rising demand for it, almost like you’re addicted. Thankfully, any time you start to overthink like that, anxiety-reducing music plays through your permanent earpiece.

As you step outside, a wall of heat knocks you back like the blow of a giant hairdryer. There’s a faint background hum of struggling air conditioners. The sky is often marred by smoke from frequent bush fires and pollution, but your Mirage filters the sky into a childlike blue. It also changes the concrete world into a green covered landscape (because your Mirage has tracked your sight lingering on any video of the ailing Amazon). The illusion aligns itself with all real-world objects and their spatial dimensions, so you can interact with reality through your personalised Alt-R.

Passersby wear their avatars like disguises. You can tell who else is wearing a Lenz by the coloured ring around their iris, and by their slight Esotropia — a crossing of the eyes caused by prolonged periods of focusing on augmented content. Your own condition is getting worse, but you’re booked into the Vision Bar next month, so that’s cool.

The growing number of homeless are replaced by the cutest virtual deer (because your Mirage knows you loved visiting the deer parks when they were open). You load up your social media streams in the side of your vision, and, hey — that meme you shared has over 4000 views. Your Sight is up to 23%! Your existence re-affirmed — for the next few minutes at least — you forget about the woes of the world, junked up on a steady stream of distraction to get you through the day. Tik Tok Tik Tok Tik Tok.

Tik Tok Tik Tok Tik Tok。

(Back to the present)

Yes, I took a few liberties in my future-thinking, hypothesised with grand enthusiasm, and leapt with great faith into the assumption that humanity won’t change even as the world does. Sorry about that. But that’s partly what future thinking is for, to help us see today through a different lens — will the imminent advancement of AR and MR open our eyes to a better world or blind us to the real one? This is where I could sign off with a “We’ll just have to wait and see.” But another aspect of future-thinking is to ideate a future we prefer.

(An alternate future)

Perhaps after the trials of COVID-19 settle, we find the pandemic generated a collective empathy. This deeper awareness of how our everyday choices build the future becomes more reflected in the ways we live and try to make money. Product designers program their algorithms according to the change in their own values, enabling users to proactively defend themselves against the powerful seduction of dopamine-induced denial. While internet-connected products still calculate our psychological wants, they also understand and support our moral needs, fostering a future of more kindness

It’s not a perfect future, more a Protopia of sorts, a balance of what’s realistic and what isn’t, because we moved from a passive wishing to an active hope, and we shaped the future with our hearts as much as our minds.

One of today’s awarenesses of technology is our mantra-like demand for control over our personal data. Perhaps the next generation will be demanding transparency of, and control over, the growing number of embedded auto-filters increasingly augmenting their world-view. Predictive and anticipatory technology make our lives easier, more personalised, but they can prevent us from wandering too far out of our comfort zone and block the soul-food of random experiences trying to reach us. Flick off a filter or two, make time for discovery, and leave room for unpredictability, for that is what the future is — a sea of possibility just waiting to be forged by the aches and joys of our hearts.
