In thispaperwe discusstwo differentmethodsof inferringcharacteristicsof theinterioroceandynamicsfrom radarsignaturesof internalsolitarywavesvisibleon synthetic apertureradar(SAR) images.The firstoneconsistsin therecognitionandtheinterpretationof seasurfacepatternsof internalsolitarywaves;thesecondoneconsistsin theanalysisof themodulationdepthof thenormalizedradarbackscatterincgrosssection(NRCS) associatedwith internalsolitarywaves.For thispurposewe considera datasetcomposedof SAR andin situmeasurementscarriedoutfrom 1991 to 1997 in the regionof the Straitof Messina.Therecognitionandtheinterpretationof seasurfacepatternsof internalsolitarywavesin theStraitof Messinacanbe usedto studycharacteristicosf thedensitydistributionin the area:The internalwave field varieswith seasonavl ariationsin the verticaldensitystratificationand with remotelyinducedvariations,i.e., variationsinducedby thelarger-scalecirculation,in the horizontaldensitydistributionI.n orderto inquireintothepossibilityof inferringparameters of theinterioroceandynamicsby analyzingthemodulationof theNRCS associatedwith in- ternalsolitarywaves,severalnumericalsimulationsarecarriedoutusinga radarimagingmodel.Thesesimulationsareperformedby assumingdifferentwind conditionsandinternal waveparametersI.t is shownthatanaccurateknowledgeof windconditionsis crucialfor de- rivinginternalwaveparametersandhenceparametersof theinterioroceandynamicsfrom the modulationof measuredNRCS associatedwith internalsolitarywaves.
